Verdict: I highly recommend this campground - one of the best I've stayed at!
The Good:
The Not So Good:
- Close to Lake beach and breathtaking mountains and trails
- Bathrooms had plenty of hot water and were clean
The short of it is that this is a spectacular park for both couples and families. Here are the pros and cons:
- Staff was super nice and helpful
- Awesome playgrounds for my young kods
Camped out in three (3) small to large tents. You're neighbors are close by but with a fire pit/friends, you don't even notice their noise. The campsite was under trees and the lake was an easy 150 foot walk down a hill. Bathrooms all over the place, so don't worry about that. The only downside (arguably a plus for some people if they like to detach from) is the lack of phone service in case of emergency. Overall 5 stars. Nothing extravagant or luxurious. If you like to get your hands dirty, this is the place to camp!
We were planning to stay at the free campground a few miles back but little did we know we were arriving at the start of Gauley season so the water in the lake went down a bit each day (they release the water for the rafting). We lucked out and got an amazing spot right on the lake with an almost 360 water view. The park was busy on the weekends and about 1/3 full during the week. We stayed in September 2017 and would stay again, for as long as the park allows. Water and electric at the site, nice dump station. Great cell service (AT&T and verizon) and nice interior roads. Some trees need trimmed and they have pull thrus that are more parallel parking, not exactly big rig friendly.
- Amazing tent site locations. Our was right on the lake. Our kids could swim right next to our site.
Nice camping, most of spots will be near the lake, so nice when you wake up in the morning. Also bathrooms and toilets are available.
Pretty nice sites, lot of RVs. Clean bathrooms and showers. Unfortunately quiet time beginning at 10 pm not respected or enforced as a couple groups were yucking it up past midnight, hard to get any sleep.
- Sites are small and not super private, but the camp was quiet and the lakeside view made up for it.
